UPDATE: Since this article was originally published, there has been a major update to the Google Adwords Keywords Tool which renders the legacy interface (which this technique currently relies on, useless for anything other than the domain lookup script you are about to read about. I’ve got a more recent post about the major differences in the reported search counts between the old and new GAKT interface.
UPDATE 2: Since this script was never updated to work with the updated Google Adwords interface, I’ve created my own solution. You can check it out here, and not only does it work with Firefox, but also Safari and Chrome.
Nope, you didn’t read that wrong, Firefox users can can now get domain name availability right inside GAKT (Google Adwords Keyword Tool) with the addition of a tiny little greasemonkey script created by Oliver Tani. The script is called “Domains by Volume” and it only requires that you be running Greasemonkey in Firefox.
Once you have it installed, your GAKT interface suddenly gets the addition of a nifty set of domain name availability columns, just like Micro Niche Finder. Click here to see a full screen view of domains by volume. [EDIT: keywords have been blacked out because this is my next microsite project.Yes, that's exact match
]
Take a peek at the screenshot below to illustrate how this works…
You can see from the screenshot above, that the Greasemonkey script has added .net and .org (currently it can only check 2 domain extensions at a time) to the right side of each result. If the exact match domain name is available, the extension will be hyperlinked to allow you to register it.
Once you’ve registered the site, you can create a micro niche adsense site in about 2 minutes with Clickbump Engine for WordPress.

I am totally ignorant of how to go about making use of the GreaseMonkey tool although I’ve read the manual. Can someone give me a clue of how to go about installing a script to show domain names availability?

It is not working for me either. I installed Greasemonkey okay, and the script seemed to also install alright. I restarted Firefox like they suggest, but I don’t get my domain availability columns coming up. Can someone give the steps in super-easy newbie friendly style please? Thanks!

Ah, I just noticed something. Your screenshot shows the ‘old’ Adwords Keyword Tool interface, and I discovered today that we (at least ‘I’ in Australia) can no longer access this version. Is this the problem? Will the script need to be updated in order to work now? Can someone advise? Thanks!

@Sue – Make sure that you are in the legacy interface view. Check the top right corner of the screen. If it has a link that reads “Previous Interface”, click that to force the legacy view of the tool.
If that doesn’t work, just enter this URL to force the legacy interface:
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?forceLegacy=true

Scott – that solved the problem – thanks, you’re brilliant!

Hi
Thanks for the heads up but the old interface is pretty much useless as the search volume of almost all keywords in the old one is roughly 7-8 times the volume the newer one reports! whats your take on this? which one have you found to be more accurate and to be a truer representative of the actual search volume?
regards
john

John, I’ve just published an article on that very topic earlier today. This method is still valid, however, the search counts are unreliable compared to the new interface. I’m expecting the script author to update the domain lookup script to work with the new interface sooner than later.

Are You sure that it doesn’t send your search terms to script author?

Yes, I checked the code myself and also spoke directly to Oliver to confirm this. He does not snoop on your searches. He does get a commission if you use his links to purchase the domain.

Great to know. Thank You.
Do You know “where” this script check domain availability? I’m asking cause some registrars are known to use or sell this data, so that if You find good domain using their service and don’t buy it immediately, someone is going to do it for You

Hi Scott, is Domains by Volume still working for you? Mine stopped working a few months ago and no matter what I do, I can’t get it to work. Have tried the legacy site etc. Just wondering if it is only on my computer & firefox or if it doesnt work now for everyone?

@Barry: I don’t believe its worked since the last GAKT update
